Regarding Braveheart and the Myth of an Independent Scotland: Reflections on Contemporary Scottish Nationalism

Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze both the cinematographic production of Braveheart and the historical truth that hides after it. The author tries to show the signs of the living Scottish identity in the film of Mel Gibson and how these take part in a discourse of opposition and displeasure, carried out by some layers of the Scottish society against England, going deeply in the field of the history of habits. He compares these elements with the historical code and here there are shown distortions caused by the cinematographic industry, too. After the study of the film, routes of transmission of the Scottish's independence myth have been described, from their origins to today, paying special attention to their present historical formulation, represented by the Scottish National Party (SNP): its origins, evolution, good characteristics and future perspectives.

Keywords: England - historical cinema - history of mentalities - nationalism - Scotland - Scottish National Party
