Abstract

August Kubizek's book, Adolf Hitler, mein Jugendfreund, the memoirs of Adolf Hitler's only teenage friend, has long been considered a major source of information about Hitler's youth. In it, Kubizek devotes a chapter to what has come to be known as Hitler's "Rienzi Experience," in which Adolf is said to have climbed a mountain after attending a performance of Wagner's Rienzi at the Linz Theatre; dramatically incarnated the character of Rienzi from the opera; and revealed his destiny to become the saviour of the German people. Historians, however, have long ignored or trivialized Kubizek's account, and even ridiculed other historians who take it seriously. In this article the author presents Kubizek's account of this event and its significance; assembles the evidence corroborating it; reviews the different ways historians have handled it; explains the story behind why historians have reacted to it so; reviews two investigations into Kubizek's credibility; and concludes that the corroboratory evidence strongly supports Kubizek's account as constituting primary evidence, thus establishing a prima facie case for its veracity.

Keywords: Adolf Hitler, nazism, August Kubizek, memoirs, Rienzi.
